John Greenland, MD PhD
John Greenland, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist, pulmonologist, and transplant researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. He is Professor of Medicine at UCSF, a staff physician at the San Francisco VA Health Care System, and Co-Director of the UCSF Lung Transplant Research Program.
John has followed an interdisciplinary path throughout his career. He studied chemistry at Stanford University, with minors in computer science and history, and co-founded a web-based technology company. He then attended Harvard Medical School, where he earned both his MD and a PhD in virology. He subsequently trained in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and in pulmonary and critical care medicine at UCSF.
His clinical work at the San Francisco VA spans critical care, pulmonary medicine, interstitial lung disease, and transplantation. He evaluates veterans with advanced lung disease for transplantation and other therapies and helps coordinate their care with UCSF. He has chaired scientific and consensus initiatives for the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, is a Fellow of ISHLT, serves as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Transplantation, and is an NIH study section member.
Mentorship and teaching are central to his work. He has trained students, fellows, postdoctoral scientists, and physician-scientists across disciplines and received the 2026 UCSF Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Mentorship Award.
Outside the lab, John spends much of his time with his two kids and enjoys being outdoors—hiking, camping, kayaking, and exploring the natural world.
